Being a parent for nearly two decades now, I know a bit about self-sacrifice, as do most parents. You work hard to pay the bills and contribute for your children, but how often do you take care of yourself? There is only so much time in the day to do your job, speak the house, clean the clothes, make the meals, help the kids with school work and take them back and forth to their after-school activities. That leaves tiny to no time for parents to indulge in their own recreational activities.
It's rather unfortunate that for all parents give, they leave very tiny for themselves. Has there ever been a sport you wanted to take part in? Or maybe dance lessons you'd like to take? How about a new hobby, like wood working or jewelry making? Personally, I think everybody should have an outlet; something that they can pour their heart into and get great personal pleasure in accomplishing. I have all the time wanted to try archery, but the financial and time constraints of having a house have located this desire squarely on the back burner.
Hobby
Lately, though, I have come to the realization that everybody needs to be able to share in an extracurricular activity. If time, or the lack thereof, is the sole suspect you fail to indulge yourself then maybe you could include your family. For instance, if playing baseball is your thing, take the house to the batting cages each week. If football is what interests you, involve your whole house (brother, sisters, aunts, uncles, moms, dads and the kids) in a weekly football pool. Have everybody pitch in to get a gift certificate for the someone with the winning article (monetary incentives all the time keep kids interests).
If financial concerns are what prevents you from treating yourself to some much needed diversions, make a list of what interest you most. Some businesses offer free or low cost classes. For instance, Michael's Arts and Crafts shop offer classes on crafting projects or Wilton cake decorating classes for a very small fee. They even offer a free kids crafting program. If you're a handyman (or woman), check with your local Home Depot or Lowes. Often times they offer free workshops to promote new power tools or products. If you just cannot find something that interests you and you need some new ideas do a few broad Google searches on hobbies or recreation.
