Are you interested in keeping bees as a hobby? It's a entertaining hobby with lots of rewards. There is a lot to learn about it and many citizen get put off at the beginning because of that thinking it's way too complicated. It's not. Bees yield in the middle of 30 and 100 pounds of honey a year and there's nothing that tastes like fresh "home-grown" honey. Are you a gardener who wants to encourage the world's best pollinators to hang out in your organery to help it grow? Do you want to get beeswax from your hives to use at home or sell? Or are you just fascinated with the busy creatures and want to learn more about them by having them in your garden? Any or all are great reasons to keep bees as a hobby.

What do I Need to Start keeping Bees?

As a beginner hobbyist you want to start small. Two to four hives are a good start. Two so that you can compare the expand of each and potentially use one hive to help the other. More than four hives is more than a beginner should start with. You can always add more. Here are the basics you need to get started:

Possibly a license depending on where you live. Check local requirements. Hives. Can be built or purchased. Many plans ready online. Bees. Colonies can be purchased by mail or locally. Check and see if there is a beekeeping club near you. Hold your local beekeepers and make some new friends! If not, check online. Colonies should be ordered in January to be shipped in the spring. The spring is such a busy time for beekeeping the orders need to be placed way ahead of time to be sure to be filled when the time comes. A frame for your hives that can be set where it won't be disturbed by citizen or animals. Bee suit/hat with a veil. It's not bee proof, but bee defiant with elastic at the wrists and ankles to keep bees from crawling inside your clothes. A smoker. Hive tool. A handy dandy all purpose tool that resembles a small crowbar that's used for all sorts of beekeeping tasks.

These are some ideas on what you need to start keeping bees as a hobby. There's always lots more to learn about these entertaining creatures which makes it a hobby that will keep you studying and interested for a long time.
