Summer Hobbies

The arrival of summer is always looked send to with great anticipation, especially in the northern U.S.; and now that it has now arrived, the ask is what to do. We all enjoy being outside, soaking up the sunshine. But after awhile, come those days when the newness of toys received at Christmas lose their glisten, and suddenly the "I'm bored" syndrome settles in. Summer hobbies to the rescue! When you engage in summer hobbies, you chase away boredom and expand your world.

Taking a hike or a walk is not only healthy, but provides you the opening to get small rocks and stones, ideal for rock tumbling and polishing. Small stones and rocks take on a deep luster, showcasing their unique charm after hours in a tumbler. This summer hobby carries well into the winter months. Stockpile those stones now to make unique jewelry or craft items to give as Christmas or birthday gifts.

Another fun hobby activity which could even be part science class curriculum is the collecting of insects. Summer brings out countless species of butterflies, moths, and dragonflies, as well as beetles and other hard shelled bugs. It is a perfect time for preserving and creating an insect range board. This author found bug collecting to be a fun task that helped with his grade in science class.

Casting can be both a fun and educational summertime hobby. By using Plaster of Paris or a latex casting material, you can cast the tracks that animals have left behind in soft soils. It is also a great way to copy century-old imprints of fossils on rocks which hold their impressions. The materials principal for this are really carried in a small container. This is an activity favorite with Scouts; make it one for your house as well.
